Sheriff John Hanlin is a native Oregonian, born in Douglas County. John attended and graduated from Glide High School in 1980. Following graduation, he worked for the Douglas Forest Protective Association and attended Umpqua Community College. In 1986, he earned an A.S. Degree in Computer Information Systems from Central Oregon Community College and returned to Douglas County

John continued his employment with Douglas Forest Protective Association as a Forest Officer, before being hired by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in 1989.

During his tenure, John has served as a patrol deputy in the South County and Roseburg Patrol Offices, as a Street Crimes Unit investigator, and as a narcotics detective. John was also an active member of the Sheriff's Office Tactical Response Team (TRT) for more than 12 years. In April of 2001, John was assigned to the position of Commander of the Douglas Interagency Narcotics Team (DINT). In August of 2005, John was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to command the Douglas County Sheriff's Office Detectives Division.

John currently holds his Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Supervisory and Management Police Certifications from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. He has attended numerous specialized law enforcement and law enforcement administration courses offered by:

• The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center
• The International Association of Chiefs of Police
• Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards
• Training and the Oregon State Sheriff's Association

In 2008, Sheriff John Hanlin was elected to his first four-year term as the 48th Sheriff of Douglas County; he assumed office in 2009. In 2012, 2016 and 2020 John ran unopposed and was re-elected. He ran for a fifth term in 2024 and was overwhelmingly re-elected. He is currently serving a historic fifth term as Douglas County Sheriff and is the longest serving Sheriff in Douglas County history. 

In his time off, John enjoys hunting and fishing, and touring rural areas of the country on his Harley Davidson motorcycle.
