    San Francisco Utility Poles

San Francisco, The City by the Bay, has unique architectural and cultural identify. It’s famous for its bridges to old victorian houses, but also for being a leading city in tech (most recently, in AI). However, one thing that I noticed when I moved here over 10 years ago is that its infrastructure is lagging behind other big cities, at least in Europe. For example, back in 2014, there was very limited fiber optics infrastucture, but things look much better today (although, I’m still stuck with cable internet). But what is even more fascinating to me is amount of utility poles in San Francisco, especially near the Sunset district. Let’s take a look at the current state (source):

An internationally famous and well respected bodybuilder / actor, Lou Ferrigno first appeared on TV screens in 1977 as the musclebound title character of The Incredible Hulk (1977), the alter ego of meek scientist David Banner. Ferrigno was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1951 and as a child suffered from an ear infection that resulted in permanent partial hearing loss. Undeterred by what some may have perceived as a disadvantage, Lou threw himself into athletics (predominantly weightlifting and body building) and at the age of 21 won his first Mr. Universe title. For good measure, he came back and won it again the following year!

He also played professional football in the Canadian Football League, before coming to the attention of producer Kenneth Johnson, who was seeking just the right person to portray on screen the comic book superhero, The Incredible Hulk. With his 6'5", 285 lbs. frame, Lou was the biggest professional bodybuilder of the time, and had recently starred in the documentary Pumping Iron (1977), about the 1975 Mr. Olympia contest in South Africa. He successfully auditioned for the part of the green-skinned Goliath, and that is the role with which he is most closely identified.

"The Hulk" was a huge ratings success and spawned several telemovies after the initial TV series completed its run. Lou continued to remain busy in films and TV with appearances often centered around his remarkable physique. His films included Hercules (1983), Sinbad of the Seven Seas (1989) and Frogtown II (1992). Lou has additionally guest-starred on several TV shows including The Fall Guy (1981) and The New Mike Hammer (1984) and had a recurring role on The King of Queens (1998). In 1997 he was featured in the dynamic documentary about his sensational return to professional bodybuilding at age 43, Stand Tall (1997). The film detailed how he returned to compete in the Masters category of the Mr. Olympia contest against several familiar bodybuilding foes. In more recent years, he has appeared in several films, including The Misery Brothers (1995), Ping! (2000), From Heaven to Hell (2002) and a cameo as a security guard in the big-budget remake of Hulk (2003).

Big Lou is also a successful author with two books detailing his bodybuilding knowledge, and his life behind the scenes playing the Incredible Hulk on TV in the 1970s, plus he has a popular website frequented by his many fans worldwide.

Marc Klaas at time of word said in word implicitly was at the exact word signed of the Local News reporting Polly Klaas Missing, and the word intensity was self-explanatory whereas words ‘go back to Salem’ sort of sat at that word Door.

I have kept my eye out for anything relatable to Salem and tonight on TV is a word equated word mention to word Salem however in my understanding of go back to Salem I thought it was Salem, Oregon however this is applicable as the Tank Top will set.

Kosovo, June 1999. Serbia has withdrawn from the campaign. Hundreds of thousands of refugees wait over the border to return to their homes. A column of 30,000 Nato troops is advancing towards Pristina airfield – a crucial strategic position.

Unexpectedly, the Russian forces, reach the airfield first; Russia, Serbia's patron, is hoping to stake a claim in the occupation. The soldiers are pointing their weapons at the incoming Allied troops. "Destroy!" orders the US general over the radio – instructions from the very top. World War Three is on the cards. Enter crooner James Blunt. Crisis averted.

Blunt was then 25, a captain in the Life Guards and the lead officer at the front of the Nato column. He risked a court martial by refusing to obey those orders from General Wesley Clark to attack the Russian forces.

Mar 3, 2026 · Carey was previously convicted of the attempted murder of Rosemary Diskin, whom he choked inside her Hamilton home.

On a sunny Saturday in July, Claire Gravel's five siblings and 90-year-old father gathered around her grave.

It was the first time the family had been back to visit Claire's grave since a man was convicted and sentenced for her murder, which had remained a mystery for nearly 40 years.

The 20-year-old college sophomore was found strangled with her own tank top in the wooded brush along the side of a highway near Salem, Massachusetts, in 1986.

Deborah Roberts investigates for the "20/20" season premiere, "The Salem Strangler," airing Friday, Sept. 25, at 9 p.m. ET on ABC and streaming the next day on Disney+ and Hulu.

You can also get more behind-the-scenes of each week's episode by listening to "20/20: The After Show" weekly series right on your 20/20 podcast feed on Mondays, hosted by "20/20" co-anchor Roberts.

For decades, investigators tracked down hundreds of leads and kept an eye on a handful of them. Claire's family, meanwhile, spent decades in the dark.

"It's a sense of relief because the last time we were here, we had unanswered questions," her younger brother, Jim Gravel, told "20/20” co-anchor Deborah Roberts.

The Gravels are a tight-knit Irish Catholic family. Claire was "bubbly," yet "feisty," as her older brother, Bob Gravel Jr., remembers her.

"She lit up a room," he said.

Claire was studying political science at Salem State College and dreamed of becoming a lawyer and starting her own family.

On June 30, 1986, she didn't show up for her work at the National Braille Press. Two of her brothers and her roommate reported her missing. Hours later, her brothers returned home to find a fleet of police cars parked along the driveway.

"And at that point, my world shattered," her brother Mark Gravel said, as the family learned Claire was murdered.

One of the troopers who responded to the crime scene was Elaine Gill. At age 24, she was just a few years older than Claire. Gill and the other officers on the case began their investigation by retracing Claire's final steps.

Claire was last seen at local bar Major MagLeashe's in the early hours of June 29. A bouncer named Roger Boulay said a man who looked out of place was speaking with her that night. Police also staked out Claire's funeral, looking for more clues.

Over the next decade, police looked into whether Claire's case was related to a series of similar murders of young women in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Police were never able to connect them to Claire's case, and those nine murders remain unsolved.

In 2004, as Detective Gill learned more about advancements in touch DNA, she submitted Claire's tank top for processing.

Almost three years later, results showed a male DNA profile found on Claire's tank top. Detectives then submitted the profile into the national DNA database called CODIS, but were unable to find a match.

In 2007, in the nearby town of Hamilton, Massachusetts, a woman named Rosemary Diskin was attacked in her home by an acquaintance named John Carey. Diskin's 12-year-old son was home at the time and, upon hearing the commotion, went downstairs. His mother instructed him to grab a knife and stab Carey.

"I thought I was going to die," Diskin told Roberts. "I really thought I was going to die.”

Carey was tried and found guilty of home invasion and attempted murder in the attack on Diskin. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

After Carey's conviction, his DNA was entered into CODIS and resulted in a match to the DNA profile found on Claire Gravel's tank top. He attended Salem State before Claire, back in the late 1970s.

Friends and family said they never heard his name or knew of any connection between him and Claire.

Carey was charged with Claire's murder in 2022. He pleaded not guilty and went to trial in March of this year. After a nearly three-week-long trial, the jury returned a guilty verdict, and a judge sentenced Carey to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Carey is appealing the conviction.

Claire's father, Bob Gravel Sr., attended the trial. He always keeps a photo of Claire tucked in his wallet.

"Over time, I think about how my parents have been through the worst thing they say a parent can go through," Denise Foley, Claire's sister, said. "The second worst thing has to be watching your parents deal with something like this."

Bob Gravel Jr., Claire's older brother, said that their mother was never the same after Claire died -- that the sparkle in her eye disappeared.

Claire's mother, Mary Gravel, died in 2015 -- after Carey's DNA was connected to Claire's tank top, but before he was charged in the case. Claire and her mother are buried side-by-side.

What else to say then: so ugly it’s beautiful. There’s a fair amount of Reddit posts about this too:, e.g. pretty in their own way, oraging utility pole replacement. Some even make nice artwork too: like this one and and this one.

San Francisco started utility undergrounding back in 1960s, and with another push in 1990s. The undergrounding projects are expensive and complex, and also increase the maintenance cost resulting in stalled projects. But, there is a new push to burry the utilities. So, maybe San Francisco will no longer have ugly-beautiful poles in the next decade but I wouldn’t bet on it.
