The Tragedy (November 18, 1978)

• The Investigation: U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan traveled to Jonestown to investigate reports of members being held against their will.
• Airstrip Attack: As Ryan prepared to leave with several defectors, Temple members opened fire at the Port Kaituma airstrip, killing Ryan and four others.
• The Mass Poisoning: That same day, Jones ordered his congregation to drink cyanide-laced punch (Fla-Vor-Aid). Armed guards forced reluctant members and children to ingest the poison.
• The Death Toll: A total of 918 people died across the compound, the airstrip, and the group's headquarters in Georgetown, including more than 300 children. It marked the largest single loss of American civilian life in a deliberate act prior to September 11, 2001.
