Sea Cliff Mansion Tumbles Into Hole / Aged sewer line collapses under home

A sewer line burst under the pressure of a huge downpour yesterday morning, creating a sinkhole that swallowed an expensive but unoccupied house in San Francisco's swank Sea Cliff district.
Two other houses, a three-story home and an old wooden classic town house that once belonged to photographer Ansel Adams, teetered on the brink of destruction yesterday. City public works representative Alex Mamak warned that if they slide into the hole, they could take more structures with them.
By late last night, at least 23 other houses and an apartment building were evacuated, and all utilities to the neighborhood were turned off for fear that the slipping soil would rupture service lines, Mamak said.

Police barred traffic from the immediate area of the sinkhole, and people who do not live in the neighborhood were ordered to stay away.

Robert Todd Cockburn, chief engineer for the Department of Public Works, said it was difficult to determine how to shore up another endangered house at 129 24th Avenue because it is now on the edge of a cliff, and there is no way to gain access to it.

The area is one of San Francisco's finest and includes Sea Cliff and West Clay Park. The wrecked house, at 125 El Camino Del Mar on the edge of the Presidio, was described as a "grand, secluded mansion" when it was offered for sale two years ago for $2.6 million.

One El Camino Del Mar resident left a recorded message on her telephone line, saying her family had been evacuated. "At the moment," the message said, "our house is stable . . . but it is still raining, so we will have to wait and see. . . . If we don't get back to you, we hope you'll understand.”

SAN MATEO COUNTY - Caltrans in coordination with the California Highway Patrol has closed State Route 92 in both directions near State Route 35 (Skyline Boulevard) to Pilarcitos Creek Road in Half Moon Bay due to storm related sinkhole.

The full highway closure began in the early morning hours on Thursday, January 12, 2023 and will remain in
effect until Caltrans deems the highway safe for motorists to travel.
