In this lesson, you'll learn about
Cubism, the early 20th century art form that challenged tradition and
the very meaning of art itself. Both kinds of Cubism are discussed, as
are major artists of the movement.
Cubism
Doesn't it seem like every generation is only trying to outdo the last with its music, clothes, and definition of what is cool and interesting? Well, the early 20th century was no exception. Many countries around the world had industrialized in the 19th century, and the dawn of the 20th century was seen as a time of new beginnings, new ways of thinking, and new art forms that pushed the values of the old, pre-industrial, world out of the way.Cubism emerged as a form of painting that challenged all of the values of the Victorian era. People were spending less time believing in God and more time believing they could control their own fates. Science was developing at a more rapid pace, thanks to the work of Albert Einstein and his 1905 theory of relativity, and, as a result, new art forms were being created as part of an overall movement known as Modernism.
Origins
Cubism falls under the Modernist movement, which went against the Victorian ideas about God and pushed aside the previous notions that paintings should contain objects that you did not really have to think much about in order to interpret. Cubism comes in two forms. Both were created by Spanish-born artist Pablo Picasso and his French friend, and fellow artist, Georges Braque between 1907 and 1914. Cubism is different from other art forms that came before it, mainly because it was less concerned with telling a story and more interested in showing multiple viewpoints in one painting, just as Einstein's relativity had shown the existence of multiple dimensions, including time.Analytical Cubism
The first form of Cubism created by Picasso and Braque was Analytical Cubism, a form of painting that breaks objects down into geometric shapes so you can see them from all angles on the canvas. You can see Analytical Cubism in one of Picasso's most famous works, Les Demoiselles d' Avignon, which translates to 'the ladies of Avignon.'
