Jerry Dyer

Jerry P. Dyer is the City of Fresno’s 26th Mayor, sworn into office on January 5, 2021.

Mayor Dyer came into office with a vision of uniting Fresno – seeking an inclusive, prosperous, beautiful city where people take pride in their neighborhoods and community. A government that listens, keeps its promises, and is owned by the people. This is his “One Fresno” vision.

Upon assuming office, the Mayor’s Administration successfully implemented “Project Off-Ramp,” an initiative that relocated more than 600 unhoused residents off Fresno’s freeways and into safe housing, with the goal of permanent housing and a productive life.

Another successful initiative is focused on improving the City’s curb appeal. Mayor Dyer’s “Beautify Fresno” initiative has not only cleaned up neighborhoods across Fresno, it has also driven an unprecedented rise in volunteerism, with residents gathering on weekends to pick up trash in neighborhoods far from their homes.  In 2022, Beautify Fresno efforts not only met the Mayor’s challenge of collecting one million pounds of trash, but exceeded the goal in just six months.

In other neighborhoods, Mayor Dyer continues to prioritize housing of all kinds, ranging from affordable to workforce to market rate. An adequate, affordable housing supply that serves all markets is evidenced in the Mayor’s One Fresno Housing Strategy.

Mayor Dyer has a long history of investing in Fresno’s youth.  A former board member of the Boys and Girls Club, he has prioritized youth investment by launching several initiatives including the One Fresno Youth Jobs Corps program.  This program provides hundreds of hard-to-hire youth and young adults the opportunity to gain life and work skills through a City-paid internship designed to lead to City of Fresno employment and, ultimately, resources for homeownership opportunities. The program aims to help underserved youth and young adults, including those from low-income families, who have been touched by the criminal justice system, or have been in foster programs.

Other youth investments include the launch of Fresno Chaffee Zoo Days, and the 2021 renovation and reopening of Camp Fresno. Through Mayor Dyer’s One Fresno Foundation, the camp provides youth the opportunity to experience nature, the outdoors, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Mayor Dyer continues to lead ongoing efforts to revitalize the City’s core, as highlighted in the recent awards totaling nearly $300 million for public infrastructure throughout Downtown Fresno and Chinatown.  His most recent initiative includes a free trolley service connecting downtown to Fresno State via the Mural and Tower Districts, Fresno City College and the Blackstone Corridor.  The Mayor’s vision includes a vibrant downtown, where people live and enjoy a lively entertainment scene with thriving businesses serving residents as well as those who work or visit Downtown Fresno.

Before he was elected, Mayor Dyer served 40 years in the Fresno Police Department, including the final 18 years as Police Chief. He has the distinction of being the longest-tenured police chief in Fresno’s history.

This experience gives him unique insights into the City’s operations and has helped drive a motto that is central to his One Fresno vision – “We Work For You.” This is his compact with residents, a promise that city government’s role is to serve the public.  It also ensures his continued work to enhance public safety throughout Fresno.

Mayor Dyer was born in Fresno but grew up in the Fowler area and graduated from Fowler High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminology from California State University Fresno and a master’s degree in management from California Polytechnic University at Pomona.

Chosen as a Paul Harris Fellow for Rotary International, Mayor Dyer was recognized in 2018 with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Fresno County Office of Education.

Mayor Dyer has been married to his wife, Diane, for 43 years and has been blessed with two children and five grandchildren. He and his wife attend New Covenant Community Church in Fresno.

The element titanium (Ti) is the 9th most abundant element in the earths crust and is the 4th most abundant metallic element. Titanium is number 22 on the Periodic Table, has an atomic weight of 47.90, and is represented by the symbol “Ti”. The element itself is found in the forms of rutile and ilmenite in beach sand. Today, the rutile is generally mined in Australia and South Africa.

To produce the metal, the rutile is combined with coke or tar, and chlorine gas and then heat is applied creating titanium tetrachloride (TiCl 4). The TiCl 4 is then converted through a chemical process to a “sponge” product which is then melted into an ingot form. Titanium is melted either by the Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) process or by utilization of a cold hearth furnace process. If the grade of titanium being melted is an “alloyed” grade, the alloying agents are added during the compacting process. The ingot is then processed into the various mill product forms using standard metal working equipment.

Titanium’s metallurgical characteristics makes it the metal of choice for many diverse applications including Aerospace, Defense, Industrial and Chemical Processing, Medical, Naval and Marine, Sporting Equipment, Consumer Goods, and many other areas. The original application for this metal was in the military aerospace industry, specifically because of its efficiencies in structural qualities and Titanium’s strength and density. The density of Titanium varies according to grade, and ranges from .160 lb/in3 to .175 lb/in3.

Because Titanium, when exposed to oxygen, creates a layer of ceramic like oxide film, it lends itself to applications where corrosion and erosion resistance are a concern. Should the metal get scratched, as long as it is exposed to oxygen, the scratch will “heal” itself with the oxide film.

Due to the biocompatibility of Titanium, the metal is also used extensively in the human body; as hip and knee implants, pacemaker cases, dental implants, and craniofacial plates to name a few specific medical applications.

Other properties that make Titanium a “metal of choice” is its unique “look”, it is nonmagnetic, has the ability to hold strength at high temperatures, and has a relatively high melting point. Besides a high strength to weight ratio, corrosion resistance in many oxidizing environments including brackish and salt water and biocompatibility include its low modulus of elasticity which gives it flexibility and good thermal conductivity.

pi, in mathematics, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The symbol π was devised by Britishmathematician William Jones in 1706 to represent the ratio and was later popularized by Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler. Because pi is irrational (not equal to the ratio of any two whole numbers), its digits do not repeat, and an approximation such as 3.14 or 22/7 is often used for everyday calculations. To 39 decimal places, pi is 3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197.

The Babylonians (c. 2000 BCE) used 3.125 to approximate pi, a value they obtained by calculating the perimeter of a hexagon inscribed within a circle and assuming that the ratio of the hexagon’s perimeter to the circle’s circumference was 24/25. The Rhind papyrus (c. 1650 BCE) indicates that ancient Egyptians used a value of 256/81 or about 3.16045. Archimedes (c. 250 BCE) took a major step forward by devising a method to obtain pi to any desired accuracy, given enough patience. By inscribing and circumscribing regular polygons about a circle to obtain upper and lower bounds, he obtained 223/71 < π < 22/7, or an average value of about 3.1418. Archimedes also proved that the ratio of the area of a circle to the square of its radius is the same constant.

Over the ensuing centuries, Chinese, Indian, and Arab mathematicians extended the number of decimal places known through tedious calculations, rather than improvements on Archimedes’ method. By the end of the 17th century, however, new methods of mathematical analysis in Europe provided improved ways of calculating pi involving infinite series. For example, Isaac Newton used his binomial theorem to calculate 16 decimal places quickly. Early in the 20th century the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan developed exceptionally efficient ways of calculating pi that were later incorporated into computer algorithms. In the early 21st century computers have calculated pi to 100 trillion decimal places, as well as its two-quadrillionth digit when expressed in binary (0).

Pi occurs in various mathematical problems involving the lengths of arcs or other curves, the areas of ellipses, sectors, and other curved surfaces, and the volumes of many solids. It is also used in various formulas of physics and engineering to describe such periodic phenomena as the motion of pendulums, the vibration of strings, and alternating electric currents.
