The Hall of Judgment
The ultimate test took place in the Hall of Two Truths, where the jackal-headed god Anubis guided the soul to the divine tribunal:
  1. The Weighing: The deceased's Ib (heart), which held the record of their deeds, was placed on a scale opposite the ostrich feather of Ma'at—the goddess of truth and cosmic order.
  2. The Verdict: If the heart was weighed down by sins, it would be devoured by Ammit (a part-lion, part-hippopotamus, and part-crocodile beast). Those consumed faced eternal non-existence, the ultimate Egyptian fear.
  3. The Reward: If the heart was light and righteous, the soul was presented to Osiris, the god of the underworld. They were then granted access to the Field of Reeds (Aaru) to live forever in peace alongside their loved ones and pets.
Essential Preparations for the Afterlife
Because the soul needed to periodically return to its physical form, the body (Khat) had to be preserved. This led to the meticulous practice of mummification, accompanied by specific funerary rituals and amulets (like the heart scarab) designed to protect the deceased on their journey.
