I received this note from a dear and very old friend. I had known him my entire life. I had given him my first draft of, "An Independent Mind, Knot Logic" to read. I really wanted his opinion on my work. It was my first attempt to speak about the horrors that I survived as a youth. As difficult as all of this was to do, I am so glad that I made the effort when I did. I ended up losing dg in July of 2012. The following arrived not long after his passing, written in his own hand. I am truly blessed.

I think that, in a word, this is a BRILLIANT piece of work; at the very least, a challenging

prod at anyone who is engaged with the enchantment with Words-On-Paper. Stream of Consciousness is a term applied to certain works in the fifties (Kerouac, Burroughs

Ginsberg, including yours truly) Surely there were others before, I just don't know who.

Karen gives you the drift of S.O.C., but just blows it all upon the river bank with this

piercing stream of thought. That it's in tight verse form is, I think, eye-opening.

Having known Karen for most of those turbulent years only enhances my salute to this effort, revealing extraordinary talent.

The mother and family, those addressed in this piece, must shiver. The daughter, the writer,

has given us stuff that many of us may never attain to.

Cheer up Mom, I truly believe that daughter has reached beyond the trickle of a Personal

Vendetta to deep water, where many dog paddle to keep a nose in the air.

Why Do We Remember?

The other day I was thinking on the time where my mother threw hot, boiling water on my brother.  He was trying to get away out the back door.  As he was making his way through the kitchen, she grabbed the pot of boiling water and through it on him.  It saturated through his clothes and began to burn his skin.  The kitchen was filled with church members and they were trying to grab him to keep him from running out the back door.  I had been sitting at the kitchen table eating some cereal when the entire event unraveled.  As soon as I saw the fight coming I ducked underneath the table for some protection from all the adults that were filling the kitchen up even further.

It was the last time I remember my brother ever living at that house.  I have not thought on that particular situation in so many years.  In fact, it brought to mind another very dramatic event in my life.  It was at the dining room table in the same house. My step-father lit a match under my brothers bottom while these men were holding him down.  It happened in the middle of dinner and I was on the other side of the table when the entire thing began.  My mother screamed "hold him down, light a fire under his bottom," she said.  It was almost as if these events were practiced, they both went off without a hitch.  My step-father was always ready with whatever he needed in hand to fulfill the wishes of my mother.  

On this particular occasion I had made it all the way around the table and blew two of the matches out.  This was all before a man grabbed me and held me back so I could not blow the third one out.  I remember his pants catching on fire, he jumped and screamed as he was being pinned by whomever had their hands pressing down on his shoulders. Then my memory goes blank. Similar to what happened with the boiling water. My memory of the incident goes so far and then it just goes blank.  I find it frustrating to relive the moment and never be able to see it to its completion.  Never knowing how the entire incident ended.

I often think that my mind is incapable of finishing the memory due to the horror and the shock of the entire event.  When I think about it along these lines I understand that it just may be to much for me to finish the memory of the entire situation.  But if this is the case then why would we remember any of the bad events of our childhood? Especially if we are prohibited from knowing the end-all result.  Is our mind just reminding us of something to beware of that we are coming to close to again?  Is it just our time to remember old things to possibly come to terms with the abuse and the neglect?  What good is it to remember any horrors at all?  

I am 46 years old and have gone through much of my life never having to do much thinking on these events. I put it all into paint cans in my mind.  I sealed each one with a hammer and carefully placed them into hiding.  I kept them secret.  I  had decided at 18 years old, when I ran away from all of this, that it did no good at all remembering that which I can never change.  I also decided not to report any of the abuse or neglect to the authorities because I did not think anyone would believe me.  This has always been a huge sticking point to me.  Even as the years passed and I did try to share a little bit here and there, people would always give me a side ways look and then comment, "you should forgive them."  It was odd how often that was told to me.  Many people even told me that I should begin going to Church so that I could finally find forgiveness for myself.  I have always found that a very odd one to be told, especially since I was so terribly abused with "The word of God."

When I was growing-up my mother would greet me by saying, "The spawn of the Devil has arrived."  She was so pointed in her comments that there was a time around the age of 13 or 14 years old that I did the oddest thing.  I was convinced that I must somehow be marked with 666.  So, I stripped naked in front of one of the bathroom mirrors upstairs and took a good look at myself.  I looked everywhere, in my hair, on my neck, my forehead, my back, there simply was no mark.  I felt better about myself that day but still was very confused about why she insisted I was 666, the spawn of Satan.  I used to be afraid of myself and think that somebody should most definitely kill me if I was this thing.  I had heard of all the acts that 666 was meant to do and it really did frighten me to be this thing.  

Being the spawn of Satan or the Devil depending on the which she called me that day never frightened me as much as being referred to as 666.  I am not sure exactly why, it is rather odd when you put any thought into at all.  I remember the nights that they would barge into my bedroom, with two to four church members in tow.  All of them together, my  mother and step-father in the lead, would start screaming Hallelujahs and a bunch of Blessed Be's over the Satanic Spawn, me.  I never woke until they hit the door with such excitement and anger, it would slam against the wall upon entry of so many.  I slept in this beautifully carved, single oak bed.  I would hear the door hit the wall and would immediately sit up on the side of my bed.  The attack in my room would generally last a couple of hours.  It would depend on how all the excitement of the attack drove the group.  I sat in silence, never speaking, I mean really, what would you say?  They would all take turns saying that the Demon of Silence had my tongue.  I never understood all of what they said, I would go into a sort of trance myself.  It kind of shut all the voices out. I used to think while I was sitting on the edge of my bed, "I'd rather be in here with all my demons then out there with your God."  

Every once in a while over the years I would think on these times and wonder what on earth they thought that they were doing.  It's strange, as the church members began to fall by the wayside I wondered if they ever thought about what they did to me.  I wonder if they live with their children and have happy lives never thinking what they left behind with my mother.  Do they ever think that they are also responsible for the abuse and neglect I suffered?  Or, do they believe that now they are free of my mothers clutches that they are also free of the responsibility of the acts that they committed?  I know that their children have had to go through extensive therapy.  I know that there children tell the therapists of satanic worship, drugs in the tea, of being in my mothers bathroom, of being laid out on a table in front of the congregation, of hours of being yelled at and screamed at, of being locked in the basement of the Church building, inside of an old elevator in the pitch black.  I know that my best friend did not make it, he committed suicide.  I know that his sister is one of the ones that does tell of these things.  I know that everyone believes that I should just magically move-on, while the children of these members are still in weekly therapy, still talking of these very dark times.

How am I meant to move-on when it is their parents that were part of the horrors of my life.  If the children of the Church members are still having troubled lives, unable to work or function at any kind of level, how am I expected to just drop it and get over everything?  Is it because people believe since I am the daughter of the monster herself, I can just march on through being called a whore, a dirty girl, beaten, raped, manipulated, locked-up, called a thing, an it, surviving incest and severe neglect.  I suffered all of this so that this stupid church could be started and they could live enlightened lives at the time. Did I suffer through them taking up all the time with my mother as if she was there mother, to just live an adult life with the nightmare of it all. They were unable to make a move without her approval or say so.  I know that this is what makes this a cult.  But, what I am asking is, do these same people think about everything they did to me while they were carrying out the orders of my mother on me?  I am not saying that their children are not damaged, for Christs sake they are not that much younger than I am.  In fact, some of them are older than I am.  What I am trying to say is, are these members not also responsible for the damage and bad memories I am having today? I am the only one in my family that has no contact with any of them. So, I am all alone in this world.

I went half of my life moving forward and never talking of the abuse and neglect.  I did not think it would do any good, since my abusers were my parents.  I mean think about it, where would you turn for support or even help.  As the members abandoned her, they would cut off all communication with all of us.  As if somehow I was going to go and do something cult like to them.  In fact, at one time I tried to contact a few of them just to ask them why they did the things that they did to me. I wanted to know if now they believed that it was wrong.  (It was so unfair.)  All they could do is ask me how I got their phone number and did I know their address.  They said that they were worried I would give the information to my mother.  I had told them that I had looked them up personally for my own well-being and hopeful healing.  Again, all they were worried about was that I would tell my mother I had spoken to them and that she would soon be calling them again.  They said that they had finally been able to get their family out of the clutch of the church and wanted nothing further to do with it or anyone related to her.  I told them that I had no support because as they already knew I had been the defiant one since I was young.  They wished me luck and said that my mother was to powerful.  They said they could not help me because they had been under her manipulative control for all those years.  They went on very quickly, saying that they had already lost years of their life, that their children had lost out on having parents and it was time to end things with this time in their life.  I didn't know what to say at the time, so, I hung up the phone with none of my questions answered.

By the selection of Death itself, I speak!

Death is a state of being that will deliver to you the birth of remembrance. Enjoying the sight to see your life with the clarity of a singular mind, yours. There is no God at Death Court. There is only the ones that you fear and speak readily of in the Church's today. Although you enjoy saying that Satan, the Devil are one in the same, they are not. Each Demon, each Spirit of the Underworld has their own identity, their own name and therefore their own claim. It is not a simple means to die. It is full of complications and proof must be provided to all that you have to claim that you believe makes you innocent or free from sin. This is not a cake walk by any means. Nor, do you get a free ride into Heaven for the Picnic, serving fried chicken on a checkered table cloth for the rest of eternity. This is just not so.   

All because in my last life, I walked straight up to God and shot him dead for the crappy life he gave me to live.  So, he is dead to me and after being told your possessed your entire life by your Christian Cult Leader Mother and Stepfather I really don't give a rats ass about your Christianity and your fouled belief of reality. I was told so many times that I am 666, The Beast, my youngest son and daughter under the age of 18 now tell others publicly they are the beast, not I.  

All I know is that I am not sorry that I did what I did, at least I fought for myself because to be given such an incredibly horrible existence is not forgive able by a simpleton like me.  And now my daughter wants the BEAST to be Tattooed in Chinese on her side to support her mother in this madness that the Christian Cult Parents I was so blessed with began.

I write so that I can respect the only one that knows better but I want him to understand my pain without prejudice as to why I am not following what I was raised to do.  It is my Mother's Brother, MY Uncle, who will one day discover my blog and rise against his sister.  That is my hidden hope. I want him to know they called me 666 and told me I was possessed with Demons my entire young life.  I never spoke or told anyone for fear of being beaten yet again by my Step-Father, Hugh Meakin.   Because their parents, my Grand parents were Ministers for the ASSEMBLY of God, a real religion, not a made of cult called Christ Bearers Chorale Congregation established down the street from my mothers sole supporter, Jim Jones.  I want my uncle to know I am a good girl, just very confused as to who is correct and who is incorrect after so many years of this type of abuse.  So I finally went against what I was being taught because I felt that taking another's life and destroying it for purposes of financial gain was wrong.

And I know one day he will be able to explain to me why I am alright, just upside down in my belief.  All because I feel I am good and they are evil, I just don't know how to communicate better than I am trying to do everyday since March 14 of 2011.  I am a good girl and my children are better, but still suffering at the  hands of these monsters today.

The question is, "What would you have done at two years old?"

Today the day that I was born,

ever since I have been scorned.

My family does what they do best,

Horse training refers to a variety of practices that teach horses to perform certain behaviors when asked to do so by humans. Horses are trained to be manageable by humans for everyday care as well as for equestrian activities from horse racing to therapeutic horseback riding for people with disabilities.

Historically, horses were trained for warfare, farm work, sport and transport. Today, most horse training is geared toward making horses useful for a variety of recreational and sporting equestrian pursuits. Horses are also trained for specialized jobs from movie stunt work to police and crowd control activities, circus entertainment, and equine-assisted psychotherapy.

There is tremendous controversy over various methods of horse training and even some of the words used to describe these methods. Some techniques are considered cruel, other methods are considered gentler and more humane. However, it is beyond the scope of this article to go into the details of various training methodology, so general, basic principles are described below. Goals[edit]

The range of training techniques and training goals is large, but basic animal training concepts apply to all forms of horse training. The initial goal of most types of training is to create a horse that is safe for humans to handle (under most circumstances) and able to perform a useful task for the benefit of humans

A few specific considerations and some basic knowledge of horse behavior helps a horse trainer be effective no matter what school or discipline is chosen:

• Safety is paramount: Horses are much larger and stronger than humans, so must be taught behavior that will not injure people.
• Horses, like other animals, differ in brain structure from humans and thus do not have the same type of thinking and reasoning ability as human beings. Thus, the human has the responsibility to think about how to use the psychology of the horse to lead the animal into an understanding of the goals of the human trainer.
• Horses are social herd animals and, when properly handled, can learn to follow and respect a human leader.
• Horses, as prey animals, have an inborn fight or flight instinct that has to be adapted to human needs. Horses need to be taught to rely upon humans to determine when fear or flight is an appropriate response to new stimuli and not to react by instinct alone.
• Like most animals, a young horse will more easily adapt to human expectations than an older one, so human handling of the horse from a very early age is generally advised.

Stages[edit]

Regardless of the goal of training, most horses go through a predictable series of steps on their way to being "finished" animals for a given discipline.

Training of foals and younger horses[edit]

Most young domesticated horses are handled at birth or within the first few days of life, though some are only handled for the first time when they are weaned from their mothers, or dams. Advocates of handling foals from birth sometimes use the concept of imprinting to introduce a foal within its first few days and weeks of life to many of the activities they will see throughout their lives. Within a few hours of birth, a foal being imprinted will have a human touch it all over, pick up its feet, and introduce it to human touch and voice.

Others may leave a foal alone for its first few hours or days, arguing that it is more important to allow the foal to bond with its dam. However, even people who do not advocate imprinting often still place value on handling a foal a great deal while it is still nursing and too small to easily overpower a human. By doing so, the foal ideally will learn that humans will not harm it, but also that humans must be respected.

Horses too young to be ridden are trained to accept a halter, taught basic skills, manners, and become accustomed to human activity. Some, like this yearling, are shown in conformation classes.

While a foal is far too young to be ridden, it is still able to learn skills it will need later in life. By the end of a foal's first year, it should behalter-broke, meaning that it allows a halter placed upon its head and has been taught to be led by a human at a walk and trot, to stop on command and to stand tied.

The young horse needs to be calm for basic grooming, as well as veterinary care such as vaccinations and de-worming. A foal needs regular hoof care and can be taught to stand while having its feet picked up and trimmed by a farrier. Ideally a young horse should learn all the basic skills it will need throughout its life, including: being caught from a field, loaded into a horse trailer, and not to fear flapping or noisy objects. It also can be exposed to the noise and commotion of ordinary human activity, including seeing motor vehicles, hearing radios, and so on. More advanced skills sometimes taught in the first year include learning to accept blankets placed on it, to be trimmed with electric clippers, and to be given a bath with water from a hose. The foal may learn basic voice commands for starting and stopping, and sometimes will learn to square its feet up for showing in in-hand or conformation classes. If these tasks are completed, the young horse will have no fear of things placed on its back, around its belly or in its mouth.

Some people, whether through philosophy or simply due to being pressed for time, do not handle foals significantly while they are still nursing, but wait until the foal is weaned from its dam to begin halter breaking and the other tasks of training a horse in its first year. The argument for gentling and halter-breaking at weaning is that the young horse, in crisis from being separated from its dam, will more readily bond with a human at weaning than at a later point in its life. Sometimes the tasks of basic gentling are not completed within the first year but continue when the horse is ayearling. Yearlings are larger and more unpredictable than weanlings, plus often are easily distracted, in part due to the first signs of sexual maturity. However, they also are still highly impressionable, and though very quick and agile, are not at their full adult strength.

Rarer, but not uncommon even in the modern world, is the practice of leaving young horses completely unhandled until they are old enough to be ridden, usually between the age of two and four, and completing all ground training as well as training for riding at the same time. However, waiting until a horse is full grown to begin training is often far riskier for humans and requires considerably more skill to avoid injury.

After a young horse is taught to lead and other basic skills, various tasks can be introduced to the horse as it matures while it is still too young to be ridden. Some schools of training do a great deal of work with young horses during their yearling and two-year-old years to prepare them for riding, others merely reinforce the basic lessons taught to the horse as a foal and simply keep the horse accustomed to the presence of humans. Many times, a young horse did not have all necessary basic skills described above taught to it as a foal and its "adolescent" years are spent learning or re-learning basic lessons.

Several ground training techniques are commonly introduced to a young horse some time after it is a year old, but prior to being ridden. All horses usually have some or all of this ground work done prior to being ridden, though the time spent can range from hours to months. While a foal or yearling can be introduced to a small amount of ground work, a young horse's bones and joints are quite soft and fragile. So, to prevent joint and cartilage injury, intense work, particularly intense work in a confined circle (such as advanced roundpenning orlongeing), should wait until the horse is at least two years old. Common ground training techniques include:

• Liberty work, sometimes called free longeing, round pen work or roundpenning, but regardless of terminology, is the process of working a loose horse in a small area (usually a round pen 40–60 feet/15–20 meters in diameter) with the handler holding only a long whip or a rope lariat, teaching the horse to respond to the voice and body language of the handler as he or she asks the horse to move faster or slower, to change direction, and to stop.
• Longeing (Lungeing- UK), pronounced "lungeing", the training of a young horse to move in circles at the end of a long rope or line, usually about 25 to 30 feet long.
• Desensitization, sometimes called sacking out, the process of introducing a horse to flapping objects such as blankets, teaching the horse to allow itself to be touched by an object and not to fear things that people move about a horse.
• Introduction to a saddle and bridle or harness, without actually getting on the horse or hooking up a cart.
• Ground driving, also called long-lining, teaching a young horse to move forward with a person walking behind it, a precursor to both harness driving and having reins used by a mounted rider.
• Bitting, the process of accustoming a horse to a bit and bridle, sometimes with the addition of side reins that attach to a saddle, harness, or surcingle (a wide leather or nylon band that goes around the horse's barrel) and accustom the horse to the feel of pressure on the bit.

A horse is not ready to be ridden until it is accustomed to all the equipment that it needs to wear and is responsive to basic voice, and usually rein, commands to start, stop, turn and change gaits.

For some disciplines, ground work is also used to develop specific types of muscling as well as to instill certain behaviors. When ground work incorporates both mental and muscular development, it may take considerably longer for the horse to be ready to be ridden, but advocates of these methods maintain that the additional time on the ground allows the horse to advance more quickly or with better manners once under saddle.

The age that horses are first ridden, or "backed" (UK) varies considerably by breed and discipline. Many Thoroughbred race horses have small, light riders on their backs as early as the fall of their yearling year. Most stock horse breeds, such as the American Quarter Horse, are ridden at the age of two. Most horses used in harness have a cart first put behind them at age two, and even some horses not ridden until age three will be trained to pull a light cart at two, in order to learn better discipline and to help develop stronger muscles with less stress. The vast majority of horses across disciplines and throughout the world are first put under saddle at the age of three. However, some slower-maturing breeds, such as the Lipizzan, are not ridden until the age of four.

The act of getting on a horse for the first time goes by many names, including backing, breaking, mounting, and simply riding. There are many techniques for introducing the young horse to a rider or to a harness and cart for driving, but the end goal of all methods is to have the horse calmly and quietly allow a rider on its back or behind it in a cart and to respond to basic commands to go forward, change gaitsand speed, stop, turn and back up.

Ideally, a young horse will have no fear of humans and view being ridden as simply one more new lesson. A properly handled young horse that had adequate ground work will seldom buck, rear, or run away when it is ridden, even for the very first time.

Discipline-specific training can take years to perfect.

Horses that have never been taught to be ridden can learn at any age, though it may take somewhat longer to teach an older horse. An older horse that is used to humans but has no prior bad habits is easier to put under saddle than is a completely feral horse caught "wild" off the open range as an adult. However, an adult feral horse may be easier to train than a domesticated animal that has previously learned to treat humans with disrespect.^[1][2]

The number of the beast (Koinē Greek: Ἀριθμὸς τοῦ θηρίου, Arithmós toû thēríou) is associated with the Beast of Revelation in chapter 13, verse 18 of the Book of Revelation. In most manuscripts of the New Testament and in English translations of the Bible, the number of the beast is six hundred sixty-six or χξϛ(in Greek numerals, χ represents 600, ξ represents 60 and ϛ represents 6).^[1] Papyrus 115 (which is the oldest preserved manuscript of the Revelation as of 2017), as well as other ancient sources like Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus, give the number of the beast as χιϛ or χιϲ, transliterable in Arabic numerals as 616(χιϛ), not 666;^[2][3] critical editions of the Greek text, such as the Novum Testamentum Graece, note χιϛ/616 as a variant.^[4]

The number of the beast is described in Revelation 13:15–18. Several translations have been interpreted for the meaning of the phrase "Here is Wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast..." where the peculiar Greek word ψηφισάτω (psephisato) is used. Possible translations include "to count", "to reckon" and also "to vote" or "to decide";^[5] the Neoplatonic mathematical compilation Theologumena arithmeticae uses the verb ψηφίζω (psephizo) not just to denote "to tally" or "to add up", but indeed explicity for calculating the numerical value of a word by adding up the numerical values ascribed to its letters^{[citation needed]}. See also isopsephy (the Ancient Green equivalent of gematria), which is derived from the same origin ψῆφος (psephos) "a pebble (such as used in a vote tally)".

In the Textus Receptus, derived from Byzantine text-type manuscripts, the number six hundred sixty-six is represented by the Greek numerals χξϛ,^[6][7] with the Greek letter stigma (ϛ) representing the number 6:

In several editions of the Greek Bible, the number is represented by the final three words, ἑξακόσιοι ἑξήκοντα ἕξ, hexakósioi hexēkonta héx, meaning "six hundred [and] sixty-six":^[9][10]

Revelation 13:18 states that if one is wise and has an understanding to count the number of the beast, which is also the number of a man, the number comes to 666.

χιϛ[edit]

Although Irenaeus (2nd century AD) affirmed the number to be 666 and reported several scribal errors of the number, theologians have doubts about the traditional reading^[13] because of the appearance of the figure 616 in the Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus (C; Paris—one of the four great uncial codices), as well as in the Latin version of Tyconius (DCXVI, ed. Souter in the Journal of Theology, SE, April 1913), and in an ancient Armenian version (ed. Conybeare, 1907). Irenaeus knew about the 616 reading, but did not adopt it (Haer. V, 30) noting instead that those who spoke with the Apostle John "face to face" said that the number was 666.^[14] In the 380s, correcting the existing Latin-language version of the New Testament (commonly referred to as the Vetus Latina), Jerome retained "666".^[15][16]

Around 2005, a fragment from Papyrus 115, taken from the Oxyrhynchus site, was discovered at the University of Oxford's Ashmolean Museum. It gave the beast's number as 616 (χις). This fragment is the oldest manuscript (about 1,700 years old) of Revelation 13 found as of 2017.^[2][3] Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus, known before the Papyrus 115 finding but dating to after it, has 616 written in full: ἑξακόσιοι δέκα ἕξ, hexakosioi deka hex (lit. "six hundred and sixteen").^[17]

Papyrus 115 and Ephraemi Rescriptus have led some scholars to regard 616 as the original number of the beast.^[18] According to Paul Louis Couchoud, "The number 666 has been substituted for 616 either by analogy with 888, the [Greek] number of Jesus (Gustav Adolf Deissmann), or because it is a triangular number, the sum of the first 36 numbers (1+2+3+4+5+6+...+36 = 666)".^[19]

Interpretations[edit]

The beast's identity and the beast's number are usually interpreted by applying one of three methods:^[20]: 718

1. Using gematria to find the numbers that equate to the names of world leaders, to check for a match with the scriptural number.
2. Treating the number of the beast as a duration of time.
3. Linking the scriptural imagery and symbolism of the Antichrist with characteristics of world leaders who oppose Christianity.

Identification by gematria[edit]

In Greek isopsephy and Hebrew gematria, every letter has a corresponding numeric value. Summing these numbers gives a numeric value to a word or name. The use of isopsephy to calculate "the number of the beast" is used in many of the below interpretations.

Nero[edit]

Since 1830s, theologians like Christian Friedrich Fritzsche, Franz Ferdinand Benary, Ferdinand Hitzig and Eduard Reuss pointed the number 666 to Nero, who was the first emperor to have persecuted Christians.^[21] Preteristtheologians typically support the interpretation that 666 is the numerical equivalent of the name and title NeroCaesar (Roman Emperor 54–68 AD).^{[22][23][24][25][26][27][28]} Written in Aramaic, this can be valued at 666 using the Hebrew numerology of gematria, and was used to secretly speak against the emperor.^{[citation needed]} Additionally, "Nero Caesar" in the Hebrew alphabet is נרון קסר NRON QSR, which when interpreted numerically represents the numbers 50 200 6 50 100 60 200, which add up to 666, although this has been disputed by some who note that the second Nun is in its final form (sofit) and thereby the value would be 700 instead of 50 which would make Caesar's name add to 1316 instead of 666.^[29]

The Greek term χάραγμα (charagma, "mark" in Revelation 13:16) was most commonly used for imprints on documents or coins. Charagma is well attested to have been an imperial seal of the Roman Empire used on official documents during the 1st and 2nd centuries.^[30] In the reign of Emperor Decius (249–251 AD), those who did not possess the certificate of sacrifice (libellus) to Caesar could not pursue trades, a prohibition that conceivably goes back to Nero, reminding one of Revelation 13:17.^[31]

Preterists argue that Revelation was written before the destruction of the Temple, with Nero exiling John to Patmos.^[32] Most scholars, however, argue it was written after Nero committed suicide in AD 68. Our Sunday Visitor's Catholic Encyclopedia has noted that Revelation was "written during the latter part of the reign of the Roman Emperor Domitian, probably in A.D. 95 or 96".^[33]Additional Protestant scholars are in agreement.^[a]

Because some people believe Revelation 13 speaks of a future prophetic event, "All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world." (Revelation 13:8 NKJV), some have argued that the interpretation of Nero meeting the fulfillment is an impossibility if Revelation was written around 30 years after the death of Nero.^[b][36][37] However, rumors circulated that Nero had not really died and would return to power.^[38]

It has also been suggested that the numerical reference to Nero was a code to imply but not directly identify emperor Domitian,^[39][40] whose style of rulership resembled that of Nero, who heavily taxed the people of Asia (Lydia), to whom the Book of Revelation was primarily addressed.^[41] The popular Nero Redivivus legend stating that Nero would return to life can also be noted; "After Nero's suicide in AD 68, there was a widespread belief, especially in the eastern provinces, that he was not dead and somehow would return.^[42] Suetonius (XL) relates how court astrologers had predicted Nero's fall but that he would have power in the east. And, indeed, at least three false claimants did present themselves as Nero redivivus (resurrected).^[43]

An Aramaic scroll from Wadi Murabba'at, dated to "the second year of Emperor Nero", refers to him by his name and title.^[44] In Hebrew it is Nron Qsr(pronounced "Nerōn Kaisar"). In Latin it is Nro Qsr (pronounced "Nerō Kaisar").

Muhammad[edit]

Gematria has also been used with the word Maometis (Ancient Greek: Μαομέτις); which scholars have described as a dubiously obscure Latinisation of a Greek transliteration of the Arabic name محمد (Muhammad). A leading proponent of the Maometis interpretation was Walmesley, the Roman Catholic bishop of Rama.^[45] Other proponents include 16–17th century Catholic theologians Gilbert Genebrard, François Feuardent, and René Massuet.^[46] Maometis in Greek numerals totals 666:

Thom (1923)^[47] rejects "Maometis" as a valid translation, observing that

"of the seven different ways in which Muhammad's name is written in Euthymius and [by] the Byzantine historians, not one is the orthography in question".

None of the spellings actually used add up to 666 under Greek gematria.^[47]

Setton (1992) is critical of the idea: Muhammad was frequently defamed and made a subject of legends, taught by preachers as fact.^{[48]: 1–5} For example, in order to show that Muhammad was the anti-Christ, it was asserted that Muhammad died not in the year 632 but in the year 666. In another variation on the theme the number "666" was also used to represent the period of time Muslims would hold sway of the land.^{[48]: 4–15} In Quia maior, the encyclicalcalling for the Fifth Crusade, Euthymius Zygabenus and Zonaras wrote the name as "Maometh" and Cedrenus wrote the name "Mouchoumet" none of which is the "Maometis" in question.

King of Israel[edit]

Fr. Sloet of Holland proposed the title of Antichrist as king of Israel.^[49] He wrote that, "The Jews have ever looked forward to the Messiah as a great leader to restore the kingdom of Israel. They rejected Jesus because He did not fulfill this expectation... He will be king of a restored Israel, not only king, but the king par excellence. In Hebrew this idea could be expressed by the words (hammelek l'Yisrael), which have the requisite numerical value of 666; but in order to obtain this number kaph medial (כ) must be used in melek (king) instead of kaph final (ך‎)."^[50]

The Classical Greek word charagma (χάραγμα), translated as mark (of the beast) in Revelation 13:16 can also mean any mark engraved, imprinted, or branded; stamped money, document, or coin.^[51][52]

The mark of the beast is interpreted differently across the four main views of Christian eschatology.

Preterist view[edit]

A common preterist view of the mark of the beast (focusing on the past) is the stamped image of the emperor's head on every coin of the Roman Empire: the stamp on the hand or in the mind of all, without which no one could buy or sell.^[53] New Testament scholar C.C. Hill notes, "It is far more probable that the mark symbolizes the all-embracing economic power of Rome, whose very coinage bore the emperor's image and conveyed his claims to divinity (e.g., by including the sun's rays in the ruler's portrait). It had become increasingly difficult for Christians to function in a world in which public life, including the economic life of the trade guilds, required participation in idolatry."^[54]

Adela Yarbro Collins further denotes that the refusal to use Roman coins resulted in the condition where "no man might buy or sell".^[55][56] A similar view is offered by Craig R. Koester. "As sales were made, people used coins that bore the images of Rome's gods and emperors. Thus each transaction that used such coins was a reminder that people were advancing themselves economically by relying on political powers that did not recognize the true God."^[57]

In 66 AD, when Nero was emperor—about the time some scholars say Revelation was written—the Jews revolted against Rome and coined their own money.

The passage is also seen as an antithetical parallelism to the Jewish institution of tefillin—Hebrew Bible texts worn bound to the arm and the forehead during daily prayer. Instead of binding their allegiance to God to their arm and head, the place is instead taken with people's allegiance to the beast.^[53]

Idealist view[edit]

Idealism, also known as the allegorical or symbolic approach, is an interpretation of the book of Revelation that sees the imagery of the book as non-literal symbols.^[58]

The idealist perspective on the number of the beast rejects gematria, envisioning the number not as a code to be broken, but a symbol to be understood. Idealists would contend that because there are so many names that can come to 666 and that most systems require converting names to other languages or adding titles when convenient, it has been impossible to come to a consensus.

Given that numbers are used figuratively throughout the Book of Revelation, idealists interpret this number figuratively as well. The common suggestion is that because seven is a number of "completeness" and is associated with the divine, six is "incomplete", and the three sixes are "inherently incomplete".^[20]: 722 The number is therefore suggestive that the Dragon and his beasts are profoundly deficient.

Historicist view[edit]

Historicists believe Revelation articulates a full range of the history of the Christian church, from John's day to the Second Coming of Christ. The author alludes to Daniel 2:28 and 2:45; Daniel's vision (Daniel 2) uses symbols giving a sequence of future events in history, from the Babylonian empire, through Medo-Persian period, Greece and Rome, continuing until the end of the current civilization.

The Augsburg confession given to Charles V in its 28th article stated "They likewise cite that the Sabbath has been changed to Sunday contrary to the Ten Commandments, as they see it, and no example is hyped and cited so much as the changing of the Sabbath, and they thereby wish to preserve the great authority of the church, since it has dispensed with the Ten Commandments and altered something in them."^[59] Rome was identified as the little horn power that changed times and laws (Daniel 7:25). Some protestants such as the London minister Thomas Tillam and court physician Peter Chamberlenduring the reformation began to identify Sunday worship as the Mark of the Beast.^[60][61]

This apocalyptic volume builds on Daniel's approach focusing on major points of Christian history: the cross of Christ (Rev. 5:6,9,12); the Second Coming(Rev. 14:14–16; 19:11–16); the 1,000 years in heaven (Rev. 20:4–6); the third advent of Christ to earth along with his loyal followers and the destruction of Satan and those who refused Christ (Rev. 20:7–15); and the creation of a new heavens and a new earth where death, sorrow, and sin cease and God dwells with His people (Rev. 21:1–8, 21:22–27; 22:1–5). The Book of Daniel is divided into two parts: The historical narrative of the captivity of Judah, and the prophecies pointing to both promised Messiah and the events of the end of the world. Attention to the text of Revelation aids the student of Bible prophecy by showing how the Apostle John and Jesus intended us to interpret Bible apocalyptic literature as found in Daniel.^[62]

Seventh-day Adventists taking this view believe that the 'mark of the beast' (but not the number 666) refers to a future, universal, legally enforced Sunday-sacredness. "Those who reject God's memorial of creatorship—the Bible Sabbath—choosing to worship and honor Sunday in the full knowledge that it is not God's appointed day of worship, will receive the 'mark of the beast'."^[63] "The Sunday Sabbath is purely a child of the Papacy. It is the mark of the beast."^[64]. In the encyclical Dies Domini, Pope John Paul II stated that "The Sunday assembly is the privileged place of unity: it is the setting for the celebration of the sacramentum unitatis which profoundly marks the Church" and this was also repeated in other catechisms and documents.^[65][66][67]Adventists note the old testament definition of a hand and forehead mark in texts like Exodus 13:9, Exodus 31:13-17, Ezekiel 20:12 provide important understanding of terms in Revelation's figurative language.

Do not honor Sunday with worship.	Commandment 4 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Futurist view[edit]

Some fundamentalist Christian groups, as well as various Christian writers in other traditions, interpret the mark as a requirement for all commerce to mean that the mark might actually be an object in the right hand or forehead with the function of a credit card, such as RFID microchip implants.^[68] Some of these groups believe the implantation of chips may be the imprinting of the mark of the beast, prophesied to be a requirement for all trade and a precursor to God's wrath.^[69][70] Similar objections were raised about barcodes upon their introduction.^[71]

Numerical significance[edit]

Baháʼí Faith[edit]

In the writings of the Baháʼí Faith, 'Abdu'l-Bahá states that the numerical value given to the beast referred to the year^[72] when the Umayyad ruler Muawiyah I took office as Caliph in 661 AD. He opposed the Imamate, according to the beliefs of Shia Islam, who continued to pay the tax required of nonbelievers and were excluded from government and the military, and thus bore a social "mark".^[73] (See also the scholarly accepted year of birth of Jesus about 666 years before as well as the concept of Mawali who were non-Arab Muslims but not treated as other Muslims.)

Jehovah's Witnesses[edit]

Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the beast identified by the number 666 represents the world's unified governments in opposition to God. The beast is said to have "a human number" in that the represented governments are of a human origin rather than spirit entities. The number 666 is said to identify "gross shortcoming and failure in the eyes of Jehovah", in contrast to the number 7, which is seen as symbolizing perfection.^[74]

Fear and superstition[edit]

The fear of 666 (six hundred sixty-six) as the number of the beast is called hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia.^[75][76] Variant phobias are called hexakosioihekkaidekaphobia, which is the fear of 616 (six hundred sixteen), and hexaphobia, which is the fear of 6 (six). Known cases of these fears include:

• In 1989, Nancy and Ronald Reagan, when moving to their home in the Bel-Air section of Los Angeles after the latter left presidency of the United States that same year, had its address—666 St. Cloud Road—changed to 668 St. Cloud Road.^[77][78]
• In 1988, the address of Chicago's American Furniture Mart building was changed by its new owner from 666 to 680 N Lake Shore Drive, ostensibly to distance the new tenancy from the former owners' financial problems.
• In 2003, U.S. Route 666 in New Mexico was changed to U.S. Route 491. A New Mexico spokesperson stated, "The devil's out of here, and we say goodbye and good riddance."^[79]
• The phobia has been a motif in various horror films such as The Omen and its 2006 remake (released on 6/6/06), and in music albums such as Iron Maiden's The Number of the Beast. The number of the beast also appears in films such as Pulp Fiction, The Doom Generation, End of Days, Final Destination, Bedazzled, and The Phantom of the Opera.
• Some women expressed concern about giving birth on June 6, 2006 (6/6/06).^[80]
• In November 2013, Codie Thacker—a cross-country runner at Whitley County High School in Williamsburg, Kentucky—refused to run in her Kentucky High School Athletic Association regional meet, forfeiting a chance at qualifying for the state championships, when her coach drew bib number 666.^[81]
• In 2015, US Representative Joe Barton had the number of a legislative bill he had introduced changed from 666 to 702 because "the original bill number carried many different negative connotations", according to a spokesperson.^[82]
• In 2017, church leaders in Papua New Guinea were concerned by newspaper reports that the Governor-General had been requested to sign 666 writs for an upcoming election. They were reassured by the Electoral Commissioner that the number merely reflected 6 copies of each writ for 111 electorates.^[83]
• In October 2017, flight AY666 from Copenhagen to Helsinki (HEL) departed for the last time before being renamed to AY954. Since 2006, the flight had been scheduled on a Friday the 13th on 21 occasions. A Finnair spokesperson said that the number had not been renamed due to superstitious passengers.^[84]
• In 2021, Brookfield Properties decided to renumber 666 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, which it had just acquired and planned to spend $400 million renovating, to 660 Fifth Avenue.^[85]
• During the COVID-19 pandemic, some groups associated COVID-19 vaccines and mask wearing with the mark of the beast, or that it was a microchip in the vaccine.^[86] Some religious leaders spoke out against this misinformation,^[87] as did medical institutions such as Hennepin County Medical Center.^[88] A similar version was spread by Marjorie Taylor Greene, who referred to vaccine passports as being the mark of the beast.^[89]
• In 2023, PKS Gdynia, a Polish bus operator, decided to renumber line 666, which runs to Hel, Poland, a town on the Hel Peninsula, to 669.^[90]
