In the vertical, though less significant for large aircraft, are thermals rising off of fields. For light aircraft, these can create sudden lift, and usually less dramatically some sink. Another source of turbulence is horizontal wind shear. This commonly occurs along the boundaries of the jet stream or jet streaks (smaller regions with winds higher than that of a typical jet stream).
