Officer Chris Olocco (cq) of the San Francisco Police
Did you know that there is a 27 year waitlist to join the San Francisco Police (S.F.P./SFP) Mounted Unit? Here's the story of one cop and the infamous now retired Chief Greg Suhr written by HubCity:
New Rule For San Francisco Mounted Police
Posted by HubCity
They may have been policing the streets on horseback for over 140 years but it seems the San Francisco Mounted Police Department are facing a shake-up. The department have just added a new requirement that will see all mounted officers wear helmets whilst patrolling the streets on their equine steeds. To mark this change, Police Chief Greg Suhr along with Rusty and Charlie- two of the departments trusted steeds (there are 13 in total who live at the police stables located in the golden Gate Park) gathered at John’s Grill restaurant where lunch was served to the two lucky horses.
Officer Matthew Castagnola will attend with his mount, Charlie whereas 13 year old Rusty is ridden by Roth who will also attend. Roth explains how along with the other horses Charlie is completely at ease with city life, nothing fazes this equine which makes him an exemplary member of the mounted team. Roth joined the mounted police department over four years ago, but has been a member of the force since 1981 – so revered are the mounted unit that there is up to a 27 year waitlist to join the mounted department. The San Francisco Mounted Police Unit began duty way back in 1874, so no wonder being a part of this esteemed and effective tradition is so in demand.
